How do we create value for local communities from rural tourism?

PROBLEM

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
The client’s objective was to reduce poverty and create positive economic and social impact in rural communities through rural tourism.
A key challenge was to engage various stakeholders in the project, from the local communities and different levels of government, to the private sector and participating agencies from the UN.

APPROACH

  • The project team conducted an extensive market study in collaboration with local partners.
  • Stakeholder consultations were held with the public and private sector.
  • Communities across 19 municipalities participated in workshops.

OUTCOME

  • The plan defined the strategy, key projects, capacity building and investment requirements for the development of rural tourism.
  • It was approved by local and national stakeholders, as well as by the UN agencies in more than 6 workshops at a national and local level.
