THE FAKAWEE METHOD
APPROACH

The Fakawee Method® is based on best practices in creativity and innovation. It draws primarily from Design Thinking and Lean Startup. It also uses methodologies such as LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®.

The Fakawee Method® engages people in the innovation process, thereby, creating better products and better business results.

The essence of the Fakawee Method® is getting people excited about innovation so that they can build creative confidence and entrepreneurial skills, build better teams and ultimately, better organisations.

HOW WE DO IT?

Key to the method is engagement and participation. Everyone participates. We work in multi-disciplinary teams and everyone has a voice. This is important because good ideas come from everywhere.

Thereby creating a culture of experimentation in the organisation and, ultimately, better business results.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT?

We need people that are creative, who know how to develop their creative confidence, so that they are motivated about solving the challenges that they face. In so doing, create better products, better business results and better organisations.

The very survival of organisations requires constant experimentation and motivated people. It is important that creative and innovative techniques are part of everyone’s skillset.

The future of work depends on it.

THE FAKAWEE METHOD ®

Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a human-centric approach to innovation. First taught at the Stanford School of Design (d.school) in 2005 and applied by IDEO in solving ”wicked problems”, it is an integral part of innovation courses at leading business schools and is used in innovative organisations.

The methodology consists of 5 stages namely empathise with the user, define the problem, ideate to create many solutions, prototype to visualise the solution and finally test the solution with users. This process then repeats as iterations are done in order to create better solutions.

Google Sprint

The Google Sprint is a methodology developed by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky and Braden Kowitz at Google Ventures in 2012. It applies the Design Thinking process in a 5 day innovation sprint. During 5 days a multi-disciplinary team works together to solve a tough problem. The process consists of identifying the problem and target user, sketching solutions, selecting the best ideas, building a prototype and testing it with target customers.

Lean Startup

The Lean Startup was developed by Eric Ries. It is the application of lean thinking to the innovation process.

The Lean Startup is the methodology in the startup world. It is a method based on experimenting, testing solutions and iterating based on the feedback in order to build better products and ultimately better businesses. It is an iterative process based on building a solution, measuring its impact and learning.

Lean Canvas

The Lean Canvas is a 1-page business plan template which breaks a business idea into its key components. It was created by Ask Maurya as an adaptation of the Business Model Canvas of Alex Osterwalder for startups. It is the go-to business plan template used in startups. Instead of long business plans it forces the entrepreneur to summarise the key assumptions of the business in one page.

Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas, developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur, is a practical methodology to easily describe and explain a business. The method comprises of 9 building blocks of which explains how an organisation intends to create value and make money.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a facilitation methodology developed at The Lego Group. It is based on the theory of visual thinking and thinking with our hands. It aims to improve creativity and communication in teams. During a facilitated process participants define a challenge to solve, build 3D Lego models of their ideas, share their models and reflect on insights. The process ensures that everybody in the team has an opportunity to share their ideas. It is a playful methodology used for complex problem solving in organisations.

OUR APPROACH ⎜THE FAKAWEE METHOD®

The Fakawee Method® aims to engage and excite people in the innovation process, creating teams that are motivated and are generating better products and better business results.

The Fakawee Method® combines the best in creativity and innovation. It draws primarily from Design Thinking and Lean Startup, as well as methodologies such as LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®.

Aproach 8steps-40

STEP 1 Frame Challenge

The first step in the process is to explore what the challenge means. We do this through sharing perspectives of what the challenge means to every person in the team.

Expected outcome
A shared understanding of what the challenge means.

Aproach 8steps-41

STEP 2 Empathise

The second step is to learn about the problem from people who have the problem and stakeholders (people and organisations) who may have an impact on the problem.

Expected outcome
A better understanding of the problem from the perspective of potential users and experts.

Aproach 8steps-42

STEP 3 Reframe

Once you have a better understanding of the problems, your team will reframe the problem to specify exactly what the problem is and who the potential users are. We will use a technique called “How Might We” in order to do this.

Expected outcome
A How Might We statement which defines what the problem is and who the user is.

Aproach 8steps-43

STEP 4 Ideate

Time to get creative! Now we move into solution mode. Ideation starts with getting inspired by ideas from other sectors. Then we experiment with various ideation techniques in order to create a solution.

Expected outcome
A solution sketch which explains your idea.

Aproach 8steps-44

STEP 5 Prototype

Once we have our solution sketches, we create rapid prototypes of our ideas. This gives forms to our ideas and gives us something tangible that we can share with users.

Expected outcome
A prototype of your solution (it can be a product or service) which you can share with your potential user.

Aproach 8steps-45

STEP 6 User Test

Now it is time to put your solution in front of your user. We test our solutions in order to evaluate whether our idea creates value for the user. Think of this as conducting an experiment so that you can learn.

Expected outcome
Learnings from the users which allow you to create a better solution.

Aproach 8steps-46

STEP 7 Iteration

After the user test you will prioritise what you would like to change in your solution.

You then start another ideation and prototyping cycle in order to improve your solution.

Expected outcome
Definition of changes you will make to your solution.

Aproach 8steps-47

STEP 8 Business Model

The final step is the definition of the resources required to create the solution, as well as the revenue model and the costs.

Expected outcome
Definition of a sustainable business model and the resources required.
